Laser Hair Removal

Are you tired of shaving, waxing or plucking unwanted hair? Morpheus Medical Aesthetics offers permanent laser hair reduction to men and women at our Larkspur location, Morpheus Medical Aesthetics.

Hair — everybody has it. It’s a feature seen from the head to the toes, but unwanted hair can become a cosmetic concern that is frustrating to deal with. It may grow in unfortunate locations such as the upper lip or between the brows, or can grow too quickly on the arms and legs. You can try to remove it, but anyone who has tried to shave, wax or pluck their way to smoother skin knows that it always returns. Despite this, these are still the most common methods of removing unwanted hair, costing you more time, money and effort each year. Do you have to continue putting up with it?

The answer is NO! Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic procedure that effectively damages and destroys hair follicles. Laser hair removal has the potential to save you time and money because it puts an end to waxing, shaving and plucking — troublesome and tedious forms of hair removal. At Morpheus Medical Aesthetics, board-certified physician Marisha Chilcott and her exceptional staff want to help you eliminate unwanted hair with a more permanent solution. If you’re interested in learning more about laser hair removal and would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us at 415-924-1330 in Larkspur or visit our contact page.

What Is Laser Hair Removal and How Does It Work?

Laser hair removal is clinically-proven technology that targets and destroys the cells responsible for hair growth without harming the surrounding skin. It’s a simple approach for permanent hair reduction that’s fast, easy, and FDA-cleared. This technology requires multiple treatments, spaced apart in time that vary based on the location on the body. Our knowledgeable staff will advise you on how many treatments are needed to achieve the results that you seek.

Laser hair removal works by targeting unwanted hair with concentrated energy, which is absorbed by the pigment within them. When the light energy is introduced into the hair shaft, it converts into heat and damages the hair follicles, inhibiting future growth. Laser hair removal is an effective, noninvasive treatment for permanently reducing unwanted hair and can be used almost anywhere on the body, making it ideal for both men and women who want smooth skin that lasts.

What Type of Lasers Does Morpheus Medical Aesthetics Use?

At Morpheus Medical Aesthetics, we have two different lasers available for removing unwanted hair. Our laser specialists will work closely with you to determine which laser is right for you, depending on your unique needs, goals and anatomy. Some candidates may achieve better results with certain lasers depending on the pigmentation of their skin, but our broad offering of laser technology means that we can effectively meet your specific needs regardless of your skin or hair color. The lasers we use for laser hair removal include:

Clear + Brilliant Pelo Laser:

The Clear + Brilliant Pelo Laser is a diode laser that treats large areas of the body. The laser has the potential to address areas as large as the back in approximately 10 minutes. The laser has a wavelength of 808 nm and a built-in cooling system for enhanced comfort, which makes it suitable for treating darker skin tones.

Candela GentleMax Pro Laser:

The Candela GentleMax Pro Laser makes use of two different laser wavelengths: the 755 nm Alexandrite laser and the 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. By combining the two lasers, GentleMax Pro is an efficient and safe option for laser hair removal. Because GentleMax Pro is such a versatile laser, it’s suitable for any skin type. GentleMax Pro presents the opportunity for a minimally uncomfortable and fast resolution of unwanted hair.

No matter where the hair may be on your body, or how light or dark your natural skin pigment may be, our comprehensive selection of laser technology has you covered.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Laser Hair Removal?

Although the majority of men and women will qualify for laser hair removal, one of our friendly staff members will assess your needs, goals and expectations during an initial consultation to find out if laser hair removal is right for you. During this time, we will also develop a personalized treatment plan and determine which laser will produce the best results depending on your skin type. To ensure maximum effectiveness, device settings can be calibrated based on the color or coarseness of your hair and adjusted for specific treatment areas.

If you have extremely light hair, are taking certain medications, prone to scarring or have an active skin condition that could interfere with your treatment, you may not be a good candidate for laser hair removal. Our experienced team will review your medical history and discuss any potential concerns before proceeding to ensure a safe and effective treatment.

What To Expect During Treatment

After your initial consultation, our team will provide you with instructions on how to prepare for your upcoming procedure. This typically involves shaving before your appointment but to refrain from waxing, plucking or depilatories to maximize the safety and effectiveness of your treatment.

Before the laser is applied, it will also be adjusted to your unique skin color and hair to ensure optimal results. As your treatment begins, you’ll be given special eyewear to protect your eyes from exposure to harmful light emitted by the laser. A cooling gel may also be applied to provide protection, enhance your comfort and help the laser penetrate the skin. The concentrated beam of light will then be emitted into the skin in targeted areas to damage the hair follicles and eliminate unwanted hair. You may experience a warm prick or snapping sensation as the laser passes over the skin, but this is generally well-tolerated. Our trained laser specialist will apply the laser to one area at a time for even results and work quickly to eliminate unwanted hair, but the length of your appointment will vary depending on your goals. Typically, appointments for larger areas such as the arms or legs can last an hour or more, while the chin or upper lip can be treated in just a few minutes. Some lasers, such as the Clear + Brilliant Pelo Laser, can efficiently treat large areas in a short period to further reduce your treatment time.

What To Expect After Treatment

Immediately after your treatment, ice packs or anti-inflammatory creams may be given to mitigate swelling and soothe irritation. For a couple of days after your appointment, the skin may feel sunburned, so the application of moisturizers and sunscreen will also be recommended.

Patients should be aware that multiple treatments of laser hair removal will be needed to attain optimal results. Typically patients undergo six to eight sessions of laser hair removal. Multiple sessions are necessary because hair experiences three different stages of growth, making them difficult to target during dormant phases. Laser hair removal is most successful during stages of active growth, where the greatest number of hair follicles can be effectively destroyed. With each treatment, hair will return much finer and thinner than before until it stops growing. Once enough hair follicles are eliminated, a permanent reduction in hair growth will occur that helps keep your skin smooth and free of unwanted hair for years to come. If necessary, touch-up treatments can quickly eliminate any new growth that may occur.
